A question. When Hemingway and Dos Passos and Allington left the L - T ranch in '32, heading for Billings, what configuration of roads led them to go to Mammoth Hot Springs (miles in the wrong direction) and what configuration led them back eastward, to Laurel MT? I know the Bear Tooth Highway was not yet built, nor the Chief Joseph scenic highway. What roads were there back then that caused this roundabout route? Did they leave Yellowstone via Gardner and travel on roads north of the park? That's a hell of a long way around, but I guess you have to drive where the roads are. Is that what they did?
