On my first trip to Montana in '71, hitch-hiking from Glacier to Yellowstone and back, I was told the reason I wasn't getting any rides (but I was - never had to wait more than three cars, or pickups) was because of the cannibals the previous year (or two, or three years before). A guy picked up a couple of hitch- hikers, and they ate the guy.. somehow they were apprehended and they had the guy's fingerbones. Glacier Park employees would hitch-hike around the Park with signs "Not hungry -We've already. eaten". Someone from Livingston said they knew the victim, and no one was sorry to see him gone.
