That was our second winter here in the Bitterroot Valley of Western Montana. It went below freezing on Nov.1, 1977 and didn't get above 32 degrees until a chinook gifted us with 45 degree temps of February 7, 1978. And for 30 of those days in Dec/Jan it was below zero. Waterlines froze, sewer pipes froze and my husband spent the month of January welding cast iron water pumps for customers (we had a muffler and welding shop). Not much muffler work as many cars and trucks wouldn't start unless plugged in with an engine heater. Diesel fuel turned to gel unless treated and any water in gas tanks or lines froze solid. It was quite the winter.
