It's important to distinguish an "attack" versus a charge. A bear will charge and it may be a bluff charge designed to see what the intruder will do. There are countless stories of a bear "attacking" someone when in fact the more accurate expression is that the bear charged someone. While in Denali, I was charged three times by the same grizzly bear. I stood my ground. It did not attack me.
