As an undergraduate, non-English major at the University of Montana, I counted myself lucky for having had a class with Richard Hugo. The man was so real, so damaged, so brilliant, so generous in his encouragement to young poets. I don't have the discipline to be a good poet but whenever I take up with it, Dick Hugo is at my shoulder telling me to dig deeper, to write more freely and touch that part of me that makes writing an obligation.
